As my time as the 4-H intern comes to an end, I can reflect on these past three months. Of course, with any job there are some difficult times (adapting lesson plans), nerve racking times (public speaking), and stressful times (‘will everything be finished in time?!’). All of that aside, my internship has been a positive growing experience and I have really cherished my time here. As I mentioned in my previous post, the people here are the loveliest group of ladies in Arlington. Everyone welcomed me with open arms. They were always so happy and brought so much enjoyment to my days. The kids that I was able to work with through 4-H and Extended Day were so unique and full of energy, every one of them were joys to work with. I say that honestly, as looking back on experiences always reveal true feelings.

The camp staff who helped with the 4-H camp in Front Royal were so good at overcoming every impossible task thrown their way. They were, again, all so nice and had such a can-do attitude that it almost inspired me to apply to be camp staff… almost. Everyone in the Alexandria VCE office were fired up and are such genuine people. They put so much care into their programs, and are always there to help each other out if needed. It was such an honor to work with them when I had the chance. Thank you especially to Caitlin Verdu for hiring me for the summer, and being such a great mentor. I will remember all the life lessons you taught me, and remind myself to have as much confidence in myself as much as you have. Thank you for all the laughs that helped me assimilate and feel so welcomed here.

For any potential applicant that may be reading this blog now, you need to apply ASAP! This was such a rewarding experience that challenged me and required me to use a range of skills I didn’t know I had. It was so fulfilling to see all the work we did to help the kids of Arlington be paid off by their smiles and new acquired knowledge. If you want to work with kids, come up with programs, and run them, this is the best space for your creativity to flourish!

Thank you so much to everyone, I will miss you all dearly. All of you are such rare and amazing people, and I wish you all the best. Stay in touch!

- Love Käthe 😊
